DOMUS DELA EINDHOVEN
DomusDela is located on the Kanaalstraat in Eindhoven. A national monument with a rich history that goes back to the origins of the city in the 11th century, when the first foundations of the later Mariënhage monastery were laid with the construction of Ten Hage Castle on the Dommel.
For the repurposing of the monastery complex, the former Paterskerk, the Augustijns Institute, the gymnasium and the chapel Augustinianum were preserved and made more sustainable in 2020. The aim was to open the complex and make it part of the city.
ACCESSIBILITY
The municipality of Eindhoven wanted to realize a building where you can get married, say goodbye, attend a concert or award diplomas. The building had to be accessible to a wide audience. Architects Bert Dirrix and Arie van Rangelrooij integrated the ceremonial house into the monastery. 'With five national monuments facing each other, making the building transparent was a challenge. We needed a central connection point,' explains Dirrix. That became the Knoop, a new building with snow-white geometry that connects the separate historical building parts, so that the complex forms a unity and has become publicly accessible.
LIGHT AND SPACE
A roof of up to 12 meters high creates an enormous feeling of spaciousness inside. The central Knoop faces the street with a high glass facade, which is only interrupted by slender aluminum profiles supplied and mounted by Thermo Konstrukties, a leading company in aluminum facade construction. The glass was supplied by Martin Glas. “The main entrance with turnstile consisting of insulated glass and insulated profiles was made by us,” says John Abels, work planner for this project. “The same applies to the fronts when you enter the hall, which run up to the roof. This creates a very special look.” Sun-resistant glass has been used for the fronts, explains Gert van Melis of Martin Glas. “This is glass with a special sun-resistant coating. This coating gives the glass a shine that makes it slightly different in terms of appearance.”
A little further to the back, curtain wall frames have been placed on the left and right, walls of 30 to 40 meters that cover the entire length of the room. The high glass sections give the entrance of DomusDela a unique appearance. Abels: “Especially against the background of those old buildings, it creates a very special contrast.”
The cluster of buildings, which used to have their backs to the city, has opened up. It has become a multifunctional complex where Eindhoven residents can celebrate life or reflect on transience. Van Melis: “If you see what it was and what it is now, this can really be called a special project.”
