HUYGENS LYCEUM EINDHOVEN
In 2020, after ten years, the new construction of the Huygens Lyceum on Rachmaninowlaan in Eindhoven was completed. The new Huygens is a four-storey building with a gymnasium, together accounting for a gross floor area of over 10,000 m². This new secondary education building is significantly larger than the old one to accommodate the growing number of students in the future. All classrooms within the complex are located on three different floors along the outer facades. They are located around a large auditorium on the ground floor with a section at street level and a higher loft.
A long corridor runs along the classrooms and overlooks the central auditorium through a series of windows. Spaces have been created in various places in the corridors for workplaces where students can work independently outside the classroom in peace and quiet. On the one hand, the windows provide the necessary light and at the same time give the room a pleasant and 'open' atmosphere.
THE RIGHT GLASS FOR EVERY APPLICATION
Martin Glas supplied and installed all interior glazing for the Huygens Lyceum. “Soundproof glass has been used for all classrooms,” explains Wilco Kroes of Martin Glas. “Locations where, for example, subjects such as physics and chemistry are taught, where gas, heat and open fire are used, among other things, are equipped with the required fire-resistant glass.” According to Kroes, fire-resistant glazing has also been applied in the rest of the building in the required places. This applies to both windows and doors.
GLASS AND WOOD
The glass not only has a functional purpose, but also gives the Huygens Lyceum a lot of atmosphere. On the inside of the building, extensive use is made of the materials glass and wood. These give the school building a beautiful appearance and a homely atmosphere. “That is really great for a school, it has become a wonderfully unique building,” says Kroes. The skylights in the roof, which provide plenty of natural light, and the light walls also give the room a fresh, spacious and modern look. According to Kroes, the fact that the corridors are less light than the classrooms and the auditorium has to do with the glass used. “Fire-resistant glass simply lets light through in a different way than basic glass.”
With this new building, the Huygens Lyceum in Eindhoven is ready for the future.
